Peter Hennings

Peter started his career in the petroleum industry where he worked as a research scientist (Mobil Oil and Phillips Petroleum) and technical manager and research fellow (ConocoPhillips).  Peters’ areas of expertise include seismic structural interpretation and analysis, reservoir geomechanics, characterization and hydraulic modeling of fractured and compartmentalized reservoirs, fault seal analysis, thrust belt kinematics, induced seismicity, exploration and production geoscience, and geology of the Laramide Rockies and West Texas.

In 2016, and after 25 years in the petroleum industry, Peter joined the Bureau of Economic Geology as Principal Investigator to form and build the Center for Injection and Seismicity Research (CISR). In 2025 Peter stepped down from the PI role for CISR but continues at UT until early 2026 as a Research Professor, advisor to CISR, research contributor, student supervisor, and instructor.

Peter is an AAPG Distinguished Lecturer, GSA Fellow, and a founder of the AAPG Petroleum Structure and Geomechanics Division. Peter has taught more than 250 field seminars and classroom courses on seismic structural analysis, reservoir geomechanics, and Rocky Mountain structural and petroleum geology.
